Smart greenish foliage turning an attractive golden yellow. An excellent foliage plant which can be trimmed to make a dense hedge. Grows throughout most of New Zealand to approx 4m in height.
Early Maori used the timber for making their waka (canoes) and it was particularly valued for carving. Maori custom dictated that for every totara felled a young totara tree had to be planted in its place to appease Tane, the god of the forest, for removing one of his children. Totara was also highly regarded by the settlers (considered to be a second only to kauri). It was used for wharf and bridge construction, railway sleepers, telegraph poles and general building.
